Chattanooga Draws Experts For High-Speed Internet Projects

Andrew Abumoussa thinks he’s found a use for all the inane info posted by over-sharers on Twitter and Facebook, and by end of the summer he hopes to get $100,000 for his idea.

At one point or another, most every social media user has read a tweet about their friend’s love of their new outfit or their cousin’s unkickable case of the sniffles and thought, ‘Who cares?’

Abumoussa is banking on clothing manufacturers or health industry workers caring, so he and his partners at Scenedipity Intelligence are creating a way to aggregate and deliver that information.

Chattanooga Powers Smart Grid With a Gigabit

One of the nation’s only gigabit networks is now the communications force behind a new smart grid completed last week in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The utility company EPB installed its last IntelliRupter last Tuesday to finish automating its power distribution network. That means if the community suffers a power outage anywhere, EPB can re-route power automatically to continue the flow of electricity. The utility company isn’t the only one getting aggressive with smart grid technology, but it does find itself on the leading edge of communications networks. The same fiber infrastructure that underlies Chattanooga’s heralded gigabit Internet service also drives the region’s utility communications.

One More Leap for Chattanooga's Advanced Smart Grid

In partnership with S&C Electric Company and DOE, Chattanooga, Tennessee’s EPB hit a milestone in its smart grid initiative this week with the installation of the final S&C IntelliRupter® PulseCloser, a major component of EPB’s self-healing grid. The IntelliRupter is expected to cut power outage duration by 40%.

EPB is one of the biggest publicly-owned electric utilities in the country and also has another distinction: “Home to the country’s most automated smart grid of its size, Chattanooga is a unique success story in how the smart grid can be an economic engine, reduce power outages, improve reliability and prepare for future power demands,” said EPB CEO Harold DePriest.

Nibletz: We Stop In Chattanooga, TN To Talk Gig City And Gig Tank

Chattanooga TN is quickly becoming know for a lot more than just their “Choo Choo”, there is a tech scene forming in their close-knit community that plans to disrupt the rest of the U.S.  One of the backbones to their tech scene is “the gig”. That’s how the Chattanoogians refer to their 1gb fiber optic internet that already covers 150,000 homes and businesses and 600 square miles.  It’s big and it’s fast.

The “Gig” gives Chattanooga a one up over many other areas. In fact San Francisco doesn’t even have 1gb internet yet.

Chattanooga Claims America’s Fastest Broadband Service

During an evening telecast in 1969, newsman Walter Cronkite made a startling announcement: Chattanooga, Tenn., had the worst air pollution in America. It proved to be an alarming call to action for civic leaders, who have been working to distance their region from a bygone era of industrialism ever since.

In many ways, the city has succeeded. Chattanooga’s well-kept downtown and waterfront have been revitalized. The Tennessee Aquarium, billed the “largest freshwater aquarium in the world,” opened in 1992. The city’s minor-league baseball team christened a new stadium in 2000. And the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus continues to grow. Music festivals, art museums and rib joints have come to town — the trappings of a cosmopolitan community rather than a blue-collar dumping ground.

Startup America: The Gig Tank

It’s great to see people who are really passionate about what they do (or in most cases I see, what they WANT to do). I get to see it every day at the CO.LAB, as I work to help entrepreneurs get their ideas off the ground.

I am blessed to work alongside people who are passionate about their venture, passionate about their team, passionate about innovation, and passionate about their community (mine is Chattanooga).

My recent experiences at SXSW reminded me that Chattanoogans are not alone in their passion for these things.
